TikTok swiftly responded to misinformation concerns raised by the EU after the attack by Hamas on Israel.
Social media platform TikTok has indicated steps have been implemented to moderate videos associated with the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. As tensions escalated in the region, TikTok representatives stated measures are now in place to guide users searching for hashtags related to the situation.
The EU urged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to intensify efforts and provide a clear explanation of its compliance with European law within 24 hours on Friday.
Moderators have also heightened monitoring of content and increased removal of posts determined to spread misinformation about events, promote harm against individuals or violate the platform’s Community Guidelines. Livestreaming and duets have also been disabled for hashtags correlated to the issues to restrict amplification.
In a Document sent to the company on Friday, EU Commissioner Thierry Breton cautioned TikTok about its appeal to youth and the imperative to safeguard children and teenagers from violent material, terrorist propaganda, death challenges, and potentially perilous content.
TikTok emphasizes the need for balance while permitting open discussion of current events and crises. The business aims to censor manipulative or abusive content while still offering a platform for people to share their experiences or commentary on such difficult circumstances. The effectiveness of user protection during vulnerable times will be improved by ongoing evaluation of the solutions.
